What are apps?

  • Applications (or apps for short) are small computer programmes that run on your device that enhance what it can do. Your phone is operated by Android operating systems which is powered by Google, enabling you to use all Google's service with ease.
  • You can customise your phone with the things you love by shopping at Google play. Whether you want apps for chat, cooking or movie-making, the selection is endless and new ones are added all the time.
  • You'll need a Gmail account to download Android apps.
  • You can shop instantly on your smartphone or browse on your personal computer then have purchases sent to your device, just make sure you're signed in with the same account.

Arranging and working with apps

To see all your apps, touch the all apps icon on the home screen.

From all apps, you can:

  • Move between screens - Swipe left or right
  • Launch an app - Touch its icon
  • Place an app icon on a home screen - Touch and hold the App icon, slide your finger and lift your finger to drop the icon in place
  • Place an app icon in the favourites tray - Touch, hold and slide to move one of the favoutires icons out of the tray. Then use the same technique to move another one into the same position
  • Explore your widgets - Touch the widgets tab at the top of the all apps screen

Using folders

You can combine several apps in one folder.

  • Touch and hold an app over another one on the home screen
  • The two apps will be combined into one folder

Adding widgets

Widgets are small applications that you can use directly on your home screen. They change the appearance of your home screen and what you can access from it.

  • Select the all apps icon on your home screen
  • Select widgets at the top of the screen

From the main widgets screen, you can:

  • Move between screens - Swipe left or right
  • Drag a widget to a home screen - Touch and hold the Widgets icon, slide your finger where you want to place it and lift your finger
