What is roaming?

Using your phone outside of the UK is called roaming.

  • Your phone's tariff is only valid for use in the UK. So when you're abroad, making calls, sending texts and using the internet is possible because a foreign network is providing your phone with service.
  • The foreign network will then charge your network for this service, and this cost will be passed onto you.

Tip

  • If you plan on sending a lot of texts whilst you're away, it may be cheaper to send a multimedia message (MMS). An MMS can contain photos and up to 1024 characters, whereas a standard text holds a maximum of 160 characters and may be more expensive. Check the costs with your network before you travel by selecting it from the table above.
  • Avoid amassing a huge bill and still use the internet abroad by following our tips.
