Using the internet on your phone when you're abroad

Why is it more expensive to use mobile internet abroad?

• Most mobile contracts are only for using your phone in the UK, if you know you're regularly going to be using it abroad, you'll need a contract specifically for that.
• Your tariff and any data bundles included in it are only valid in the UK. When you're abroad, your network needs to connect you to a foreign network in order to be able to use your phone. Technically, there are two charges to pay, hence the increase of bill.
• If you're at all concerned about potentially larger bills from using the internet abroad, we advise you to turn data roaming off.

How can I prevent unexpected internet charges when roaming?

Before you leave the UK check whether your phone is set to download any data from the internet, such as automatic updates for apps. If it is you'll be charged for any downloads that occur when you're away, even if you haven't actively gone online. Costs for these services can be high - for specific charges please check with your network before you travel.

• An email service that sends new emails directly to your phone
• Other web-based apps that access the internet to send you live updates like sat nav map tools and automatic Facebook updates

• Call your service provider and ask them to remove your data services.
• Uninstall any web applications from your handset and turn data roaming off. Your phone's user manual will explain how to do this.

But I want to use the internet abroad!

There's cost effective ways to ensure you still enjoy the internet when you're away:

• Use Wi-Fi where possible.
